Ghana Sacks Minister, Victoria Hammah, Over $1m Claim

While Nigeria is going in circles about Minister Stella Oduah who is entangled in an embarrassing corruption maze, reports from Ghana say that Victoria Hammah, the country’s Deputy Communications Minister, has been fired allegedly for saying on audio tape she would not quit politics until she has made $1m.
On the tape, which is suspected to have been made by her driver, she is quoted as saying, "If you have money then you can control people."
Ms. Hannah has been in controversy before, after saying last August there was pressure on her to steal public money because people believed that, being a Minister, she was rich.
According to the Ghanaweb news site, she further said, “Corrupt politicians are the reflection of [a] corrupt society!"
Ms. Hannah was fired just one day after the tape which contains her $1m-making ambition went viral on social media.  It was also played on a local radio station.
In Nigeria, as reported by SaharaReporters on Thursday night, the House of Representatives’ Committee on Aviation which probed the allegations of fraud against Ms. Oduah refuted every single one of her claim, describing them as false or unsupported by the evidence.
Still, the Minister, a personal friend and major 2011 campaign supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan, remains in office.
Before his departure for Israel on October 23, Mr. Jonathan set up a three-man panel to probe the allegations against Ms. Oduah, giving it two weeks to report.
But for the first week he then travelled with a member of the panel, as well as the Minister whom he was supposed to have been investigating.
The panel is now illegally several days behind its deadline without an extension, and Mrs. Oduah remains in office.

Passengers On Aero Flight Abandoned For Hours On Tarmac In Abuja As Aircraft Breaks Down

Passengers aboard an Aero Contractor Boeing 737 plane scheduled for a trip to from Abuja to Lagos were left stranded inside the aircraft for several hours, with airline officials nowhere in sight to offer any explanation, SaharaReporters has learnt from a source who was one of the abandoned passengers.
“It was as if the Aero Contractors turned us into prisoners of war,” said the passenger, adding that many passengers were terrified as the plane sat on the tarmac of Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja for several hours, with passengers locked up inside.
Our source disclosed that Flight AJ132 from Abuja to Lagos was supposed to take off at 8 p.m., but was delayed until midnight. Then, once passengers boarded, they were left inside the aircraft until 3 a.m. on Saturday. He added that the pilots and the crew left the aircraft with the passengers without giving any explanation. A source at the airline said it was a case of “Aircraft On Ground”, a term used to depict seriousness of engine trouble that causes an aircraft to be grounded.
“I think this kind of thing can only happen in Nigeria where customers are treated by an airline as if they were just rats trapped inside a plane, and the pilots and crew members disappear just like that.”
SaharaReporters could not reach a line for Aero Contractors to obtain an official response to the incident. Several passengers booked on other Aero’s flights suffered similar delays at airports around Nigeria.

Man Sleeps With Best Friend's Skeleton For 13 Years

A 47 year old man from Brazil has been found living with the skeleton of his best friend who died 13 years ago.

Fabio Beraldo Rigol moved in to the cemetry after going broke and being abandoned by his family over his drug addiction.
The former broker only leaves to go into Santa Isabel, Brazil, to ask for food. He claims he found himself penniless and homeless after his business folded and he started using drugs .

He said: “I’m more afraid of the living than the dead. I’ve never seen a ghost. It gets a bit quiet here sometimes, but I’m not a big talker, so it suits me. I’m not very good around living people.
“I had to leave the house, and I ended up wandering the streets. One night it was raining hard. I don’t remember how, but when I woke up I was here in the graveyard.”
On most days he leaves the graveyard to ask for food in the town centre.
He said: “When it’s raining I stay inside. I never want for anything. When I need people there is always someone who gives it to me. God never lets me go hungry.”
But Mr Rigol said he doesn’t intend to stay in the cemetery until his own time comes.

The government is to abandon a controversial plan to impose £3,000 immigration bonds on visitors from “high-risk” countries in Africa and Asia after Nick Clegg threatened to block the policy.

The move will be seen by Labour as a humiliating U-turn for Theresa May, the home secretary. It came after David Cameron backed off from a full-scale confrontation with the Liberal Democrat leader, who was blocking the scheme’s progress through cabinet.

A pilot project to target visitors from seven countries — including India, Pakistan and Nigeria — who would have had to pay a cash guarantee or deposit to deter immigration abuse was to have been introduced this month.

The plan was to make visitors forfeit £3,000 if they failed to return home by the time their visas had expired. But in an announcement this weekend the government said it was canceling the plans

A Nigeria Man Jailed In UK For Raping A Woman In Her Home

Recent reports have revealed that a Nigerian night club bouncer has been sentenced to seven years in jail in the UK for rape.

34-year-old Idreez Popoola was arrested after he brutally attacked and raped his victim on the 29th of December, 2012.
According to reports, Popoola met his victim while working as an agency-employed bouncer outside Bar So in Northampton town centre. He took her out for drinks then managed to convince the woman to take him back to her home. It was in her home that he attacked her.
He was sentenced to 7 years behind bar in a court in Northampton on October 18. He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. It was also revealed that he has previously dodged deportation twice, but he will now be deported back to Nigeria as soon as he is released from prison.

160,000 Nigerians suffer stroke yearly —Experts

Though the incidence of stroke is increasing globally, the situation in Nigeria is more pathetic, experts have said. They say Nigerians, especially, suffer stroke due to preventable circumstances such as ignorance, undetected and poorly-managed conditions like hypertension, diabetes and lack of health care facilities.
They state that 80 per cent of the 160,000 cases of stroke that occur in the country yearly can be prevented if there are well-equipped hospitals and if Nigerians living with high blood pressure and diabetes manage their health properly.
Though there is no national statistics on the number of Nigerians suffering stroke, neurophysiotherapist and lecturer at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Akoka, Dr. Caleb Gbiri, says the population of Nigerians that suffer stroke is on the increase.
He says unlike before,when he saw few patients, these days, he attends to at least five to six new cases of stroke in his practice every month.
Gbiri states,“Recent statistics collated from hospitals suggests that more than  0.001 per cent of the Nigerian population suffer stroke yearly. This means that more than 160,000 Nigerians develop stroke yearly. We have not added the statistics of those that herbalists, pastors; Imams and so-called traditional healers manage.
“This figure is just too high for only one disease.”
The expert links this increase to ignorance. According to him, the majority of Nigerians who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol content in their system and end-stage diabetes and diseases that predispose to stroke do not even know that they have it.
He says,“ It is disheartening to know that 80 per cent out of the 160,000 cases of  stroke can be prevented if only people who are have hypertension, diabetes or  heart diseases can manage their health. What we see now is that most Nigerians are not ready to modify their lifestyle to the reality on ground.”
He adds that a prevailing factor why stroke patients do not survive is the myth associated with the disease in the country. According to him, investigations conducted by experts revealed that more than 50 per cent of those who suffer stroke seek medical care from quacks and unqualified persons in Nigeria.
Gbiri states,“Stroke is a brain attack, not a spiritual attack. The belief that stroke is a spiritual attack will not make an individual who has just suffered his first stroke come to the hospital. One goes go to spiritual homes to solve spiritual problems. Stroke is a condition in which the brain cells suddenly die because of a lack of oxygen and not because one is struck by lightning.
“Stroke occurs when blood flow in the body has been obstructed or there is a rupture in the artery that feeds the brain. It is a medical problem, not a satanic problem.”
Corroborating his view, stroke nurse consultant with Kings College Hospital, London, Mrs. Gloria Nkeng, whose organisation, Strokecare International, championed a road show in Lagos on Tuesday, as part of activities to mark the World Stroke Day, says the incidence of stroke continues to rise among Nigerians due to poor health-seeking behaviour.
Narrating a personal experience, Nkeng notes that ignorance reigns over knowledge when it comes to seeking treatment for the disease.
She says,“I once saw a 40-year old banker with chronic stroke who had been bedridden for two years because he had been misled. When he suffered the first stroke, he boarded a plane to Enugu, instead of heading for the hospital. He managed the condition at a traditional healer place for two years in his village.
“He was later brought to the hospital where we discovered that it was high blood pressure that caused it. It could have been detected and managed properly to prevent paralysis if he had just gone to a hospital the first day he had it.
“That is how ignorance is killing Nigerians daily.”
The Nigerian government has also not helped the situation going by the poor state of health facilities, according to the UK-trained nurse.
Asked to compare stroke care facilities in Nigeria with what obtains abroad, she quickly says, “It is incomparable. We cannot compare even the hospital beds that we have in the UK with the hospital beds here.
“The standard practice to resuscitate a stroke patient in England is 20 minutes from the period that the ambulance picks the patient up to when he/she is admitted to the stroke ward. During these minutes, we would have done a brain scan and body scan, cut through the necessary vessels and the patient stabilised in a stroke unit where there are experts, heart and blood pressure monitors and there is an alarm if anything changes.
“Even after the patient is discharged, there are experts in the community waiting to give support at home. Do you have these here?”
She also notes that the number of Nigerians going abroad for stroke care is increasing and thus calls on government and well-meaning Nigerians to establish stroke care centres in major cities. This, she says,  will improve the treatment and management of stroke survivors.
Nkeng adds, “I see a lot wealthy Nigerians, especially politicians, who come to England  to spend 10,000 pounds a week for stroke rehabilitation. Many Nigerians who can afford it are travelling abroad for treatment. We can duplicate these facilities in Nigeria. One person in this country can do it. Only if they have both political and moral will to do so.”

Murray, who served two years of a four-year sentence for causing Michael Jackson’s death, was driven away in a sheriff’s car for the “safety and security” of the jail, sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said.
The handful of Jackson fans gathered outside the jail accused the Los Angeles County sheriff of showing favoritism to Murray by slipping him out of the jail through a back exit, instead of the door where freed prisoners normally leave.

Whenever I read all manner of lies about me in the media, I wonder where all of these came from and regret being an actor. But in all, I move on and take it as one of the hazards of the job. School board fires teacher accused of giving condoms, alcohol to students

The Miami-Dade County School Board upheld its decision to fire a teacher who an investigation found that, among many violations, she had provided alcohol and condoms to students.
Isabel Diaz-Almaraz, a fine arts dance teacher at South Miami Senior High School, was found to have participated in a "multitude of grossly inappropriate conduct" that included drinking with her students, according to school board investigators.

The investigation began in July 2012 after a parent reported a photo that Diaz-Almaraz had posted on her Facebook account, said Assistant School Board Attorney Heather Ward. The photo showed Diaz-Almaraz posing in her office with several of her students while holding bottles of alcohol and shot glasses.

Underwater wi-fi given test run to create 'deep-sea internet'

Researchers have tested an "underwater wi-fi" network in a lake in an attempt to make a "deep-sea internet".

 
The team, from the University of Buffalo, New York, said the technology could help detect tsunamis, offering more reliable warning systems.
They aim to create an agreed standard for underwater communications, to make interaction and data-sharing easier.

Dozens of billboards around Lubbock, Texas, now show "Jesus" as covered in tattoos, including words such as "outcast" and "addicted."
But this isn't intended to be a publicity campaign for tattoos as much as evangelizing for Christ Jesus.
The website advertised on the billboards "jesustattoo.org" features a video of an actor portraying Jesus. He has a basement tattoo parlor where tattoos such as "fear," "addicted," and "useless" are magically transformed into "trust," "freedom," and "purpose."

The unanimous decision by three Muslim judges in Malaysia’s appeals court overturned a 2009 ruling by a lower court that allowed the Malay-language version of the newspaper, The Herald, to use the word Allah, as many Christians in Malaysia say has been the case for centuries.

At 16, Malala Yousafzai would have become the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, if she had been awarded it Friday. In addition, she would have been the youngest winner ever of a Nobel Prize in any category.

Instead, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded it to the international chemical weapons watchdog that is destroying poison gas stockpiles in Syria -- the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

Malala apparently feels like the OPCW deserves it. A message went out on a Twitter account representing her to congratulate the OPCW and thank it for its "wonderful work for humanity."
