Bridge Collapses Along Apapa-Oshodi Expressway

Cause Serious Traffic Congestion In Lagos

Collapse pedestrian bridge

There was chaotic traffic congestion yesterday on the ever busy Oshodi-Apapa Expressway when a part of the pedestrian bridge at Alaba Bus stop was pulled down by a passing tipper lorry.
Motorists groaned for several hours in the chaotic traffic situation on the road caused by collapsed portions of the expressway, with the rubble of the collapsed bridge obstructing movement
Amid the heavy downpour and heavy traffic, many of the commuters had no option than to resort to walking long distances to reach their destinations.
It was gathered that the traffic snarl occurred when a tipper hit the flyover bridge and the situation was compounded when a trailer with number plate XC 358 SKK loaded with goats rammed into the rubble from the collapsed bridge thereby bringing movement to a standstill.
Witnesses lamented that the tipper driver drove away immediately the accident occurred, but the conductor was caught and handed over to the policemen at Festac division.
Our correspondent observed at the scene of the accident that  cranes from the construction giant, Julius Berger, and Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) were seen evacuating the trailer and the rubble.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), plain-clothes security agents and LASTMA officials were on hand to control traffic.
A motorist who gave his name as Mutiu lamented the manly hours wasted because the deplorable state of the expressway, saying he had no option but to walk  home.
